Welcome to Yoganjali

Yoga is much more than making shapes on a mat. It is about seeking, exploring, and finding a connection within and out.

Yoga is a multi-dimensional practice with the potential to enrich our lives in every way and should be made accessible to everyone. It can be profoundly transformative, helping lead lives of balance, self-awareness, clarity, and joy. The practice on the mat can help us reveal who we are off the mat.

I discovered yoga after undergoing surgery for early-stage breast cancer. By the end of my first class, I was in love! The experience gave me an intimate connection with my body, which needed healing from within. 

I knew that this practice would be in my life forever and truly started my journey. After completing the 200-hours Yoga Teacher Training at Mind Body Zone, my goal of helping others overcome health challenges brought me to an apprenticeship with my teacher and mentor: Lorien Neargarder, who taught "Yoga for Cancer Survivors and Patients" at the Stanford Cancer Care Program. After completing the 500-hours Yoga Teacher Training at Breathe Together with Jennifer Prugh who has influenced my life deeply, both on and off the mat, I now am on the faculty of teacher training programs, focussing on Yoga Philosophy

My teaching incorporates all that I learn in human anatomy, yoga philosophy, mindfulness practices, and abiding love of Indian classical dance. I teach Yoga Basics for Stanford Cancer Care, Wellness Yoga at Washington Hospital, and Vinyasa Yoga for corporate and private clients in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I believe in “seva” (service): giving back to the community. Volunteering with grass-root level organizations especially for women and participating as a citizen are integral parts of my life. I am a Board Member at HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, a non-profit that serves patients and survivors from all walks of life. 

My intention is to continue sharing what I know, empowering you and me on our paths and learning as long as I live.

When the Universe gave me a chocolate croissant….

And I savored that croissant. Savored it because it landed in my hands on a day I needed it. Savored it because it made me believe in sweet serendipity. Savored it since my classmate had decided that morning to treat me with something since she thought I was going through a profound transformation. Savored it because I had forgotten to pack a lunch for a long day of teacher training. We get half an hour for lunch, and I didn’t want to miss any of the information, discussion and activities by driving out to buy something.

It’s been a while since I blogged. It’s been a while since I actually processed the change, the internalizing of the myriad experiences, some profound, some achingly simple that have come about in my life since the beginning of the Yoga teacher training program. I have learned that without knowing I am doing so I  have committed to a flirtation with something that I thought will be a shaper of thighs, and hips, and is actually much more deeper. Yes, I am married now to Yoga. And it’s just the beginning.

I have learned that I carry tension in my hamstrings, and the day I could touch my toes was one of the happiest of my life. I have learned that three nurses ( who are doing this training with me) are really concerned and moved by all that they see with their patients, and want to really help them heal within and without. I have learned that it’s not a certain body type that is ” good at yoga” but it’s the practice and release of muscular tension that can make one more flexible. I have learned that a woman who helps her husband navigate life in a wheelchair is helped tremendously by doing hip opening and chest opening asanas. I have learned that being still is the most difficult thing to do.

As I cuddle in bed with my daughter and read one of our favorite books, ….and when he came to the place where the wild things are, they roared their terrible roars and gashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws till Max said ” be still” and tamed them with the magic trick. And sometimes the magic trick can come in the shape and smell and taste of a chocolate croissant. I believe and I learn more.
